Chess Instruction in the Schools

About Know Chess!

Our Vision

The vision of Know Chess! is to bring chess to as many children as possible. Emphasis is placed on the importance of sportsmanship, and enjoyment of the game.

"Our children were so excited after their first day. We were amazed at what they had been able to retain after just one day. You clearly run a good program and I'm glad that we've made this investment!"

Regards,
-- Jeff

Our History

Know Chess! is owned by Angela Hughes.  It was founded in 1998 by Riley Hughes. Riley was asked by his friend to take over teaching a chess class in the Palo Alto Community.  Since then, that one class was parlayed into many.  In keeping with the vision and goal of the Know Chess! Company: "To bring chess to as many children as possible," Know Chess! has brought and taught chess to over 7000 children in the San Francisco Bay Area with an average staff of 35 people for each Know Chess! school season!

Riley began playing chess at the age of 11, in 1972, during the middle of the “Bobby Fischer Boom.”  He was primarily self-taught, although he occasionally took lessons from fellow chess enthusiasts, such as International Masters Guillermo Rey, Paul Whitehead, and Senior Master Mike Arné.

Riley was an “Expert” chess player, and was affiliated with both the United States Chess Federation (USCF) and Cal Chess.  He represented both of these organizations as their “Tournament Clearing House.”  In this position he was the contact person for scheduling and coordinating all of the chess tournaments in Northern California.

In accordance with the successful businessman that he was, Riley maintained mutual respect, cooperation, and camaraderie with the chess community.  This included many other chess businesses.  In Riley’s eyes there was really no need to compete, because the pie is big enough for all.  Riley believed that all children can benefit from learning how to play chess.  And his main vision is just what we at Know Chess! are all about:

"Bringing chess to as many children as possible!"

Community Involvement

We feel very strongly about being a positive part of our San Francisco Bay Area Community. We enjoy enriching the lives of our students, as well as offering employment to our local communities.

"My son has enjoyed your program so much, and I've been very impressed by all your staff and how well organized your operation is. Congratulations for a great program."

Program Benefits

Learning chess at an early age enables a child to develop many skills that can be utilized during their adult life. These important skills include critical thinking, strategic planning, and creative problem solving.

School Programs

Students learn chess in our fun, accessible after-school program, with qualified instructors and other students. Class meetings include group instruction, tournament games, and fun games.

Summer Camps

Students have fun at a special summer chess camp, while continuing to build the chess skills learned during the school year.

Thanks  for your generosity in giving scholarships to participate in the chess class & the chess tournaments. Secondly, I would like to thank you for the wonderful words you told the kids in-between the tournaments: "The losers have to learn from the winners and make friends and have fun." The trophies being given to all kids at the end is a big encouragement which proves "Everyone wins."

Thanks & Regards,
-- Sudha
